The ripe time 當紅草莓成熟時

I live on the fringe of the City of Munich, close to woodland and fields, including a strawberry field. As the strawberries come into season, many people are out in force to pick them from the field.

The best things about picking strawberries from the field are that you can eat during picking and choose only the best ones to buy. Freshness and sweetness are absolutely guaranteed!

It's too easy to pick too many strawberries when so many of them look really irresistable, and it's impossible to eat them all. How should one make use of them? Lately the supermarkets are running promotions of gelling sugar, which is most suitable for making jams. It's actually quite straightforward to make strawberry jam just by following the instructions on the packet. First, wash the strawberries and dice them up. Then put in the sugar and crush the strawberries. (The ratio of sugar to strawberries will depend on the type of gelling sugar used and will be specified in the instructions.) Bring the mixture to boil on high heat under constant stirring, and after boiling for about 5 minutes it's ready for bottling. The actual boiling time can be adjusted according to how thick you like the jam to be.

Another way to make good use of the strawberries is to make a liqueur. A very cool Dutch friend of mine had to return to the Netherlands last week. Knowing how Western people in general craze about alcohol, I decided to make a bottle of strawberry liqueur as a farewell gift following this recipe. His girlfriend told me that watermelon liqueur would also be very nice.

As more summer fruits are being rolled out, I've become more inspired to try more different sorts of jams and liqueurs. If you prefer cakes or desserts instead, there is also no shortage of things to try!

Queues and crowds

A restaurant chain well-known in Hong Kong called Tamjai specialising in mixian (a type of rice noodles) has been talking about expanding to Australia for several years. The vision has finally materialised when the first Australian branch was open in Melbourne CBD in 28th November. Wife, baby and I were already keen to try it out on its second day of opening. We waited for 1 1/2 hours since 19:00 before we got a table. Many passers-by were amazed by this queue and a lady even asked what the queue was about and whether it was indeed worth the wait. She said that the length of the queue had not changed since she last walked by 4 hours earlier! Customers can customise their own mixian noodles by choosing the soup base and ingredients. At the base price, 2 ingredients excluding the more expensive, special ones are included. The special ones...

Newborn, new experiences (3)

In preparation for our visit to Hong Kong possibly at the end of the year, our baby needs to apply for an Australian passport. After we the parents filled in the application form, we needed to have the baby's photo taken and went to a camera shop. The biggest problem was that our baby smiled at the staff's camera by habit, like looking at our phones, but passport photos supposedly only allow a neutral facial expression. The staff decided to turn to the next customer before returning to us, but right at that moment our baby stopped smiling and my wife told the staff to snap a shot quickly. The staff guaranteed that the last shot would definitely meet the passport requirement, so we've passed the photo step. Then we needed a witness for a couple of requirements in t...
