A retreat into snow

Our whole department went for a retreat at the Seeon Monastery this Monday to Tuesday (26th and 27th November). A main purpose of the retreat is for the students and junior post-doctoral staff like me to give a presentation on our projects and keep our departmental head in touch of our progress. Giving a presentation itself was no job too difficult, but the biggest challenge by far was to pack my 3 projects and the introduction into just 15 minutes. On the other hand, it was probably no easy task for the departmental head, who had to sit through more than 30 talks and absorb them all!

Even though we were at a retreat, we managed to engage ourselves in a couple of battles! On Monday evening, we did battle at the bowling lane - well, it wasn't exactly bowling, but rather a German variation of skittles called kegel. Compared to bowling, the ball is smaller and there are 9 pins instead of 10. The 9 pins are arranged in the shape of a rhombus (in a 1-2-3-2-1 pattern) and spaced apart roughly by the diameter of the ball. It was really a tall order to hit a strike; in fact, we only managed two for the whole night with 15 or so people playing 10 rounds each!

The next day, a few of us went for a walk after lunch. Two days of snowfall provided the perfect ammunition for another kind of warfare - snowball fights! From the starting point of our walk, the war spread to the bridge that crossed the lake next to the monastery, and further to the hill on the other side of the bridge. A few people took advantage of the church on top of the hill and positioned themselves there for sniper attacks, behind the walls surrounding the church! The battle was brief but exhilarating for all involved. There was enough snow everywhere that allowed anyone to kick start a new snow fight any time and anywhere, and we didn't have to worry about collateral damage from stray snowballs as we were so far away from everyone else.

Snow has been falling intermittently during the two days of retreat since Monday morning and covered the world with a fresh layer of white. The hills and roofs turned a totally new colour, while the trees got some much needed lively decorations with the snow. It was just a lovely setting so typical of winter. As I was sitting on the bus en route to the retreat, I could imagine how someone who hasn't seen snow before would be so impressed by the scenery as he or she was weaving along the same winding roads in the snow.

When autumn settles

Finally the weather has stopped being temperamental in October, and is giving us as many fine days as we ask for. The increasing chilliness in the morning air, however, is a reminder that beautiful autumn days like these don't necessarily last long! The weather was still rather warm for the first few days of the month. On 1st October, my colleagues and I took an early finish at work and went for the Oktoberfest. While it was not as jam-packed and crazy as the opening day , it was still not easy to find a table. We sat outside during the day time and switched indoors in the beer tent after dark. The atmosphere inside was simply infectious. We all entered a state of exhilaration in no time, as we saw a sea of people standing on the benches, dancing and chanting to the music of the band. It finally dawned on me how people could spend a whole day at the Oktoberfest. Beer, it seems, is the best form ecstasy for many people in Western societies! The cooler weather in the following weeken...

Start the Summer …

A carry bag from a fashion chain store caught my eye on the underground train last Saturday. The big words on the bag said, ‘Start the Summer!’ Of course the store wants to promote its latest line of summer products. Maybe the locals think that summer isn’t that far away. But to me, summer is still a distant future away and spring has barely started. Proper spring, I mean – or the kind of spring I am more used to … Yes, the weather has generally stopped being uncomfortably cold since the start of April, but winter appeared to be lingering until maybe a week or so ago and was constantly contriving a come-back. Even now, the mornings are still a little chilly and wasn’t too unlike the sunny winter days of Melbourne. But on Saturday I’ve reassured myself finally that winter weather is well and truly gone, and I could safely put away my clothes for the coldest of the days. On the same day, quite a few locals were already donning T-shirts and shorts in the streets. Makes me jealous … Up to ...

Czech it out (1) 捷克三日遊(1)

My ‘conquest’ to the east continues after spending Easter in Croatia. Over the Pentecost long weekend (10th to 12th May), three other friends and I went for a trip in the neighbouring Czech Republic. Driving was a handy option for the four of us, as the Czech Republic was not that far away (the distance between Prague and Munich is only about 400 km), petrol costs were more reasonable when shared by 4 people, and it gave us much more flexibility with where we wanted to go. The 400 km drive was quite bearable as we have chosen to make a few breaks en route. After stopping at the border for money exchange and purchasing a highway sticker, we headed for the city of Plzen and spent 2 or 3 hours there. We had lunch at the famous local brewery of Pilsner Urquell and tried some ‘local cuisine’. It turned out that the food wasn’t too different from the meaty, hearty German fare, but...
