An entangled business

This morning after hanging out the laundry, I discovered a newly woven spider web, anchored on a pine shrub on one side and small bushes on another side. That was actually quite a large span, and the web itself was also quite large with a diameter of about 30 cm. It wasn’t too hard to spot the web under bright sunlight.

What made the web noteworthy was not its size – I’ve in fact seen larger ones, and won’t be surprised if they were spun by the same spider – but how effective it was. After 3 hours or so, 20 or 30 small flying insects have already fallen prey and were trapped by this web. I was quite stunned with the success of this web. Its size obviously helped, although there were also big gaps in between threads to allow so many other small insects to fly through. But it wouldn’t be a big surprise that those unsuspecting insects wound eventually get caught when they have flown enough times. The spider obviously knew the mantra of real estate and business expansion: location, location, location!

The spider web didn’t stay terribly long, however. Perhaps because the anchor points are so far apart and have quite a difference in height, the top part of the web collapsed after another two to three hours. Before long, the bottom part also gave way and all that was left was a string decorated with many of the poor insect preys, not too unlike the clothes line hung with socks earlier in the day. The web has indeed reaped a rich reward for the spider, although it wouldn’t last beyond today. I wonder if the spider was a day-trader more interested in instant returns.

When autumn settles

Finally the weather has stopped being temperamental in October, and is giving us as many fine days as we ask for. The increasing chilliness in the morning air, however, is a reminder that beautiful autumn days like these don't necessarily last long! The weather was still rather warm for the first few days of the month. On 1st October, my colleagues and I took an early finish at work and went for the Oktoberfest. While it was not as jam-packed and crazy as the opening day , it was still not easy to find a table. We sat outside during the day time and switched indoors in the beer tent after dark. The atmosphere inside was simply infectious. We all entered a state of exhilaration in no time, as we saw a sea of people standing on the benches, dancing and chanting to the music of the band. It finally dawned on me how people could spend a whole day at the Oktoberfest. Beer, it seems, is the best form ecstasy for many people in Western societies! The cooler weather in the following weeken...

Czech it out (1) 捷克三日遊(1)

My ‘conquest’ to the east continues after spending Easter in Croatia. Over the Pentecost long weekend (10th to 12th May), three other friends and I went for a trip in the neighbouring Czech Republic. Driving was a handy option for the four of us, as the Czech Republic was not that far away (the distance between Prague and Munich is only about 400 km), petrol costs were more reasonable when shared by 4 people, and it gave us much more flexibility with where we wanted to go. The 400 km drive was quite bearable as we have chosen to make a few breaks en route. After stopping at the border for money exchange and purchasing a highway sticker, we headed for the city of Plzen and spent 2 or 3 hours there. We had lunch at the famous local brewery of Pilsner Urquell and tried some ‘local cuisine’. It turned out that the food wasn’t too different from the meaty, hearty German fare, but...

Travel advisories

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issues travel advisories for all countries in the world, and the list is nothing short of exhaustive. Obviously Hong Kong’s perpetual air pollution gets a mention (and it touched the nerves of the local media), as well as the haze that descends upon Singapore between July and October. But Australian major cities are not totally spotless in regard to air pollution. Last Saturday I was quite surprised by the reduced visibility on the roads when driving under the broad daylight of noon. Since it was not supposed to be a foggy day, the only possibility was a haze or smog of some kind. I never thought that it could occur on a day with lighter traffic like the weekend. The lab where I am working now is located on the 8th floor of a hospital building adjoining the main building of the research institute, and we have to go through an outdoor stairway whenever we want to enter or exit the main building. The stairway offers an unhindered vi...
