24 - Laboratory Version

Tick tick tick tick … 滴答滴答…… 24/4/2008 13:40 I read the e-mail from the student in my lab group, in Madrid at that time to learn how to perform an experiment so that he could repeat it in my lab next Tuesday, 29/4 (and some time in the future for me too). So he told me and my direct supervisor what he would need. The main instrument turned out to be something that our department doesn’t own, while he mentioned a special requirement for one of the reagents. I have used it before from a particular company, but it may not meet his requirement, and it’s also run out. Time to get into gear and hunt for those things – after all there were only 2 full working days between that day and the experiment day. Didn’t feel too optimistic about the experiment being able to go ahead on 29/4 as planned (now postponed by another day for another reason). Wrote back to the student telling him to prepare for a possible delay and asking for more specs for the reagent.

A piece of Greece in Regensburg

Fresh from our previous trip, my friends and I were out and about again just one week afterwards, and we set out to the nearby city of Regensburg on 30th March. Regensburg is famous for its St. Peter’s Cathedral (Dom St. Peter), which could be reached after a casual stroll through the many little streets of the city centre from the railway station. The Cathedral impressed us not only with the grandeur in its architecture but also the colourful mosaic windows. From the church, the river Danube was only a short walk away. We walked on the Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke) and back, for some exercise before lunch at the oldest sausage restaurant of Germany. We treated ourselves to the local Regensburger sausages, eaten with a bun which was almost like stone! After lunch we ventured out of town to the Walhalla Palace as recommended by the travel guides from two of us in the group. The Palace was built on a hill, during the reign of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, and is meant to be a replica of th

Going East in Easter (3) - Split

After an overnight stay in Dubrovnik, we were on our way again the next morning (Sunday 23rd March) to the city of Split in the central coastal region. Goodbye Dubrovnik, after crossing this bridge. The road from Dubrovnik to Split was actually quite memorable for several reasons. Roughly 1 hour from Dubrovnik, the road was split (excuse the pun!) and became Bosnian territory. There was the small Bosnian town of Neum, where the driver of the bus decided to pull over for a 10-minute break. What a bonus for me because I could then visit two countries in one trip! In the 10 minutes, I managed to take a decent scenic snapshot and buy a small bottle of Bosnian schnapps from a service station. I'm certainly qualified to say that I've been to Bosnia! From Neum, the road took us through a mix o
