Hobart - our brief travel review

After the Tasmanian East Coast we arrived in Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania.

Heritage buildings

As the second oldest city in modern Australia, Hobart city centre is full of reminders of its history and there are plenty of signs explaining the historical significance of various sites. One deserving a special mention is the Golding's corner which has been occupied by the same jeweller Golding & Son since 1875.

Sunday market

We missed the famous Saturday Salamanca market by a few hours upon arrival but managed to visit the other Sunday Farm Gate Market which featured stalls of local fresh and artisanal produce packed into a short street. I took the opportunity to sample a couple of whiskeys produced in Hobart.

Hobart by the sea 海濱

Compared to our last visit in May 2014, Hobart has definitely undergone a transformation at its seaside. Around the small harbour, the Brooke Street Pier has been refurbished for the ferry to MONA, a renowned private art museum in Hobart, sculptures have been installed in the sea close to the shore (Franklin Wharf) while punts selling seafood and ice cream are berthed in the Constitution Dock. The Salamanca area has also put on a facelift with modern restaurants lining up the Castray Esplanade. The Constitution Dock and Salamanca area are a hit with diners with the restaurants filled to the brim and long queues leading to the punts. The relaxing environs by the water obviously helps - as well as the town planning that appears to have concentrated fine dining in that vicinity.

Battery Point(中文暫且譯作炮台角)

From Salamanca there is a flight of steps leading slightly uphill to the suburb of Battery Point. Battery Point is distinguished by its architecture: some pockets feels like a mini English village, while a few houses sport blue roofs which are generally quite rare. The elevated geography of this suburb (hence rendering it suitable for defence of Hobart in the past) can really be appreciated on the steep roads linking Battery Point to the adjacent suburb of Sandy Bay.

Dining recommendations

* Harbour Lights Cafe

Famous for its Yachties scallop pie

* Irish Murphy's

The potato salad with prawns and salmon and vegetarian platter were definitely fancier than and refreshingly different from normal pub fare (but thankfully the prices weren't!) The amount of seafood in the salad was very generous.

* Mures Lower Deck

There's Mures Upper Deck with table service and fancy menus, but the Lower Deck also offers good quality seafood with a view of the harbour.

* Van Diemens Land Cremery

Unique flavours with quality in every taste, best enjoyed either with a view on the punt itself or over a stroll along the shore. Sure to leave you with a sweet memory of Hobart!

Newborn, new experiences (1)

The birth of our daughter at the end of September marks a new chapter and brings about new life experiences for me and my wife. Mum was admitted to a nearby public hospital for the birth. The maternity ward is a lifely and buzzling place, subdivided into many rooms occupied by up to 4 mums and their babies at a time. Visiting hours is from 08:00 to 20:00, and up to one person can visit at one time and two different people each day. These limitations are part of the hospital's covid policies when the rest of the society has moved on as if nothing had happened - apparently there used to be no limit to visitations before covid, so a dad could in fact accompany the mum and baby all night long. One long-lasting impression from the maternity ward was the symphony of baby cries in which all babies took their turns to join including mine. Calming down the baby was almost impossible in this ambience and was very tough on mum especially when she was battling her
